User reviews 1 Review. The first subseries, "Manuscript Poems," is further subdivided into categories intended to define three separate levels of poetic composition: manuscript versions of poems that appear in at least one edition of Leaves of Grass, manuscript versions of poems not published in Leaves of Grass, and verse fragments and outlines.

Blodgett and Sculley Bradley, eds. Although older, Oscar Lovell Triggs, ed. Silver, eds. The first three are comprised of manuscript versions of stories, prefaces, and essays and lectures, respectively. Four less distinct subheadings follow. Some literary criticism is contained in "Autobiographical Manuscripts" and "Whitman on His Own Writings," along with more purely impressionistic self-reflection. The last two subseries of the Writings Series bring together various published versions of Whitman's writing.

Annotated proofs of his poetry and prose are identified in the finding aid, and cross-references are included between the Proofs Subseries and the Periodicals Containing Contributions by Whitman Subseries in instances where the collection lists both a proof and a published version of a poem or article among its headings. The Periodicals Containing Contributions by Whitman Subseries provides a survey of his writing during his lifetime. Many published works by and about Walt Whitman and housed in the David M.

These can be found by searching the Duke online catalog. The JWT Legal Department microfilmed entertainment contracts include contracts for appearances on radio and television broadcasts; correspondence; folios typically collections of documents relating to an actor's career, or casting for a broadcast program ; letters of terms; notices of cancellations of contracts; photographs; talent releases and other printed documents.

Talent featured in the sponsored programming include journalists, motion picture actors, musicians, politicians such as Wendell Willkie , sports announcers, vaudeville blackface and dance performers, writers and other celebrities. Talent-based and variety shows drew from American and international performers, including African Americans and women. The New Day Films archive represents the activities of the feminist film-maker run cooperative founded in , and spans the history of the organization to the present day.

Their ground-breaking films about the lives of women were among the earliest of the emerging women's movement.

Materials include: files assembled by individual co-founders Liane Brandon, Jim Klein, Julia Reichert, and Amalie Rothschild; correspondence between co-op members; records relating to film production and distribution; steering committee and annual meeting minutes; conference call minutes; policies and other guidelines; reports on activities; fund-raising proposals; film rental receipts; press articles, posters and other publicity; publications about New Day films such as pamphlets, catalogs, and magazines; and photographs of events and members.

Analog elements and digital versions for many of the co-founder's films form an important part of the collection and relate to these seminal feminist film titles: Woo Who? Another central piece of the collection are the born-digital film files representing filmmakers who form the New Day cooperative. Topics explored in the New Day films and other materials range widely, and include but are not limited to: women's studies; multiculturalism and diversity; social and political histories; gender and socialization; media culture; the environment; mental health; parenting and family; and global concerns such as immigration and labor.

The materials in this collection were donated by Liane Brandon and Amalie R. Everyday Heroes takes a behind-the-headlines look at a diverse group of young adults who give a year of their lives through a San Francisco area AmeriCorps program to tutor and mentor needy kids.

Despite their good intentions, they are confronted by a host of obstacles, including a racial divide that threatens to thwart their efforts. While documenting a year both turbulent and exhilarating, the film reveals the hopes and dreams, successes and setbacks of a group of individuals--potentially tomorrow's leaders-- searching for their place in the world and trying, against odds, to make a difference.

Produced by Abby Ginzberg, Rick Goldsmith. Two were taught torture techniques at SOA. The third, a victim of that training, found an SOA teaching manual on torture. The producer was warned that he will be killed if he reveals the name of one of the trainees or where he was interviewed.

Produced by Robert Richter. The papers of Merle Hoffman span the years from about to , with most of the papers dating between and The bulk of the materials consist of the records of Choices Women's Medical Center, a New York City women's health clinic and abortion clinic co-founded by Hoffman in , and the organizational records for On the Issues , a feminist magazine owned by Choices and overseen by Hoffman.

The remainder of the collection consists of Hoffman's personal papers, mostly related to her pro-choice activism. The correspondence, administrative files, minutes, manuals, reports, surveys, research files, electronic records, clippings, flyers, brochures, newsletters, photographs, and audiovisual materials in the collection provide rich material for the study of the history of abortion, the pro-choice movement, women's health care, and the anti-abortion movement in the United States.

The records of Choices Women's Medical Center are especially valuable for understanding the medical practice of abortion, as well as the political context of that practice. Other topics that can be explored through the materials include contraception, women's rights and feminism, and rape. The political context of abortion is further documented throughout the rest of the collection. Hoffman's writings, speeches, and interviews on abortion illuminate the abortion debate in the media.

At the same time, the internal dynamics of the pro-choice movement are documented in files on various New York and national pro-choice organizations. Especially noteworthy are the detailed meeting minutes and other records for the New York Pro-Choice Coalition, an umbrella organization for New York City pro-choice organizations founded by Hoffman in the mid s.

In addition to her pro-choice activities, Merle Hoffman has been a vocal proponent of patient self-empowerment; an active supporter of various political candidates in New York City; and a feminist activist.

The collection reflects these interests to varying degrees. The records of On the Issues magazine are especially useful as a source of writings on a broad range of feminist and other issues. The Choices Series documents the day-to-day operations of Choices Women's Medical Center, including the clinic's medical policies and procedures, its internal administration, and its relationship with patients and community organizations.

Much of the series consists of files on administrative issues, dating primarily from the late s to the late s. A few records date from the clinic's early years in the s.

The files also document the clinic staff's rising concern about Operation Rescue, militant anti-abortion protests, and anti-abortion violence during the late s and s.

At the same time, the Choices records suggest how the ideals of feminist health care and patient empowerment have translated into medical practice. The records primarily provide the perspective of health providers rather than patients; the collection does not include patient medical records. However, patient surveys and a limited amount of patient correspondence provide some evidence of patient experience at the clinic.

There is substantial material on the Choices East Project, Hoffman's unsuccessful attempt to establish a women's health clinic in Moscow. Choices' treatment philosophy of patient self-empowerment and its identity as a woman-friendly health care provider are documented in the Outreach Subseries and the Marketing Subseries. Information on patient experiences and reactions to the clinic can be found primarily through patient surveys, patient satisfaction questionnaires, and statistical summaries of patient demographics, all found in the Subject Files, Marketing, and Electronic Format Subseries.

Choices organizational charts and staff rosters are available for reference in the Research Room's inventory drawers; please contact Research Services. On the Issues , a feminist magazine, was founded by Merle Hoffman and produced by Choices staff. The magazine covered a broad range of feminist issues and topics, including but not limited to abortion and other women's health issues. During the s the magazine became increasingly professionalized, moved from annual to quarterly publication, and operated more independently of Choices.

The documents in the On The Issues Series provide an extensive record of the magazine's production and distribution. The series includes a nearly complete run of issues. Files include reader surveys; mailing lists; drafts and correspondence from contributors; editorials by Hoffman and other writers; and working files maintained by individual editors and production staff. Electronic files contain similar materials, and include graphics. The materials extensively document Hoffman's work as a writer, public speaker, organizer, and activist for abortion rights and other feminist causes.

Hoffman's personal publicity materials, including curriculum vitae and biographical sketches, can also be found in this series.

There are also some records of Hoffman's childhood and personal life. The correspondence, found in both the Correspondence and Electronic Format Subseries, contains significant personal exchanges with feminists, friends, and colleagues that span many decades. The series also contains Hoffman's phone message books, calendars, and scrapbooks, including those related to her work at Choices and On the Issues.

Electronic files contain a variety of correspondence, mailing lists, graphics, Choice and On the Issues documents mixed on the same disks, and a few writings. Overall, the series amply illustrates the porous nature of the boundary between Hoffman's personal activities and her work at Choices and On the Issues. Especially notable are the numerous images of the Choices clinic facilities and procedures, and the detailed visual record of pro-choice rallies and other events involving Hoffman during the s.

Other photographs in the Personal Subseries include portraits of Hoffman and snapshots from a vacation at the feminist Camp Sister Spirit. The bulk of the Audiovisual Materials Series consists of audio recordings on cassette tape of New York City radio talk shows featuring Merle Hoffman as an interview subject. Most interviews date from the s or early s. In some cases, these recordings feature Hoffman responding to listeners in call-in discussions of abortion, or conducting debates with anti-abortion representatives.

Other audio recordings include interviews conducted for On the Issues stories and radio advertisements for Choices. Videotape recordings include several episodes of "On the Issues," Merle Hoffman's cable access television show, and some documentary material on Choices and its patients. Materials are not immediately accessible until use copies can be made upon request. Please consult with reference staff before coming to use the collection.

Finally, the Ephemera Series contains various memorabilia, including a box of Choices condoms, buttons, and banners with feminist and political slogans. Later accessions , , , and have been added to the end of the finding aid. Boxlists are included when known. The Murray Fanzine Collection contains approximately comic book, science fiction and fantasy fanzines representing fandom in these genres from the early s to The collection is organized into one series that is loosely separated into two sections: the first, and larger, consists of comic book fanzines ranging from the beginning of comic book fandom in the early s to the retrospective volumes published in the early s.

The second section consists of a sampling of science fiction and fantasy fanzines ranging from to the early s. Most of the fanzines in the collection were printed independent of large scale publishing techniques, utilizing ditto, mimeograph, hectograph and, later, photocopy, on paper of varying degrees of quality.

Boxes contain those fanzines pertaining to comic fandom. The earliest examples represented in the collection date to the early s, just after the very first comic fanzines had appeared, including Alter Ego , which is included here from issue 4, and Comic Art.

Fanzines dedicated to E. Also included are issues of Comics Review , which contain the first published fiction by Stephen King. The era represented in the largest number is the s, a time when the Murray brothers were very active in fandom, both in publishing as well as collecting. Though most of the issues represented in the collection from this era are single issues, some of the more popular titles, such as Bode' Bulletin , New Fangles , and In The Shadow of the Monolith , are represented in larger numbers.

Trefoil and Vertigo , both published by Edwin Murray, are represented in full. As nostalgia became big business in the s, comic books and comic fandom became more marketable. In turn, a much larger percentage of publications dedicated to comic fandom and collecting benefitted from a higher production budget. In addition, the proliferation of the photocopy allowed for a higher production number on a smaller budget.

These changes are represented in the collection, from the glossy Disney collectables magazine Storyboard and the Fantaco Chronicles Series, to the photocopied Barks Collector , Duckburg Times , and The Stanley Steamer.

Boxes contain fanzines relating to sci-fi and fantasy fandom, some of which are represented in both sections. Though not as complete a representation of the fandom of these genres as of the comics fandom genre, this section contains several of the top titles, including Don-O-Saur , Tolkien Journal , SF Commentary , Lan's Lantern , and Focal Point. Also included is a issue of Science Fantasy Bulletin published by Harlan Ellison, which was part of the initial wave of sci-fi fandom that was so influential to the beginnings of comic book fandom.

It should also be noted that scattered throughout the collection are fanzines devoted to film, particularly horror and sci-fi films, as well as fliers including one for the "first symposium on Donald Duck" held in the Geology department at Duke in and other assorted ephemera. There are also three additional accessions , , , which have been minimally processed.

Founded in in Durham, North Carolina, Student Action with Farmworkers SAF is a non-profit organization whose mission is to bring students and farmworkers together to learn about each other's lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change. The SAF records comprise: correspondence; meeting agendas; student projects; reports, articles, and other publications; event files; teaching materials; photos; scrapbooks; ephemera; and other documentation of SAF's programs.

Materials relate more widely to immigrant and migrant worker issues, service learning, labor organizing, and protests and boycotts across the U. The largest series 63 boxes contains hundreds of individual SAF student projects directed by college-age students and interns as well as farmworker and migrant youths.

Materials also include administrative files, many of which house intern applications. Project files typically contain recorded interviews, often with transcripts; essays; notebooks; artwork; poetry; audio and video recordings; theater materials; and photographs in analaog and digital formats.

Some photograph albums and collages are also found here. Most of the projects took place in North Carolina but also in South Carolina. Major themes involve worker education, housing, health, and pesticide safety; leadership development; and grassroots theater as a tool for teaching and activism. Materials are in English and Spanish. The large Administrative Files Series contains organizational records created or compiled by SAF staff and are organized in subseries for SAF projects, fundraising, general administrative files, organizations, and resource files articles, fliers, and other publications.

The Printed Material Series contains Student Action with Farmworkers publications, SAF press coverage, student papers and theses, some children's books, and farmworker-related reports, articles, newsletters, data sheets, resource directories, and alerts from around the world.

The materials relate to migrants and farmworkers both in North Carolina and throughout the United States.

Finally, the Ephemera and Artifacts Series contains items such as posters, t-shirts, stickers, and buttons related to Burger King, Subway, Gallo, and Mt. Olive boycotts and protests.

Some materials relate to protests and boycotts in other regions such as Florida and Western states. Also contains SAF publicity ephemera, and props and other materials from the Levante activist theater group. The J. Fuqua Papers span the years to , with the bulk of the collection dating from the s to the s.

The collection is separated into two divisions according to place of origin: files from Fuqua's business office and his home office. Fuqua , and include annual reports, reading files and general business papers, as well as clippings, periodicals and copies of articles about J.

Fuqua and his businesses, and some photographs. The home office files primarily document Fuqua's early career and contain many files containing financial records and other materials pertaining to the various businesses he acquired. Fuqua owned several media outlets, including a television station, thus, a large group of materials contain correspondence, applications, and other business materials regarding Fuqua's media ventures and interactions with the Federal Communications Commission.

A large component of video recordings chiefly relate to business programs with which Fuqua was involved, and the history of the Duke University Fuqua School of Business; many contain recordings of Fuqua's speeches. The original videos seem to have had a numerical identification system which was not recorded in this inventory. A small but significant group of videocassettes documents the development of Fuqua's program for managers in the former Soviet Union.

There are also a number of scrapbooks and photographs, including publicity shots of Fuqua. Although Fuqua was active in Georgia politics, serving in the Georgia House of Representatives and the Georgia Senate, there appear to be relatively few records in the collection relating to this area of his life other than materials on Jimmy Carter and his family and some correspondence from other politicians.

The Morris and Dorothy Margolin Film Collection includes 32 home movies that capture the Margolins' travels between and All of the films are in color, and a few include sound.

Also included is a handful of home movies that document family trips and events such as graduations and birthdays, and one film that appears to be a professionally produced documentary about the Soviet Union acquired by the Margolins during their travels. Particularly notable is the adventurous nature of many of the countries visited, such as the Soviet Union, Pakistan, Bulgaria, Ethiopia, and Kenya -- rare destinations for Western travelers in the s, s, and s.

The films are also noteworthy because Morris often trained his camera on his surroundings, recording everyday life as well as architectural and geographical features of the countries he visited. His wife Dorothy also makes frequent appearances in the films.

The films are complemented by over 4, color slides taken in most of these same countries from to Of particular interest are images from the former Soviet Union and Israel, both from the mids, images of South Africa during apartheid, as well as early images of France, Italy, and Thailand.

The original film was labeled , but edge code on the 16mm reversal original indicates that sections of this film pre-date ; more details are available on the film's Print Condition Report. It is possible, though, that the Margolins took more than one to the Soviet Union in the s and s.

The collection includes correspondence, layouts, drafts, galley proofs, radio scripts, working copy of advertising text, poetry, prose, published material, appointment books, scrapbooks, photographs, and other materials. Materials that predate Fishback's birth consist of a small collection of 19th-century prints and illustrations.

Macy and Co. Department Store, as well as work for advertising agencies and freelance work. Included in this series are advertisements in various stages of production: notes, drafts, proofs, and tear sheets. Administrative materials, such as correspondence, often accompany the advertisements. Materials generated or collected in the process of preparing for speaking engagements with professional societies are also included. The series also includes a small collection of trade literature, chiefly books on advertising topics written by other authors.

Large-format print materials have been removed from their original series locations and relocated to Oversize Materials. Relocated items have been replaced in the Detailed Description of the Collection by dummy folders enclosed in brackets.
